He walked into the dark cave, a lit torch in hand. It was late night, and he was alone. No one from the town dared travel with him into the cave. For some time now, it was said to be a source of ancient evil, of a darkness that would prey on the villages nearby.

"Just my luck, try to find some help for my own problems, and I end up being some great hero. Damn..."

People had been dying, a lot more than they should be. Their necks would be ripped out, the blood drained out from their veins. Not only that, but whenever they buried the dead, their graves would only be dug up and empty the next morning!

"Helloooooooo?" he called out, his voice echoing off the cave walls. "Any blood-sucking, corpse stealing crazy people in here?"

Nothing, only his voice.

"Well, maybe they have the wrong cave...or maybe I got lost and entered the wrong one, because I don't see any-" he stopped mid-sentence when he entered a large chamber filled with bodies of the dead, piles of bones dotting the cave floor.

"Oh...fuck...me..." he waved the torch around, looking at the scene. "Looks like I'm in the right place...but damn, why is it always me who has to come to the rescue? I don't want to be here right now..."

He turned to leave, but as he did, something heavy collided with the side of his face, knocking him out cold. The last thing he knew before passing out, was a horrible, foul smell.

Time passed and he awoke to find himself, arms and legs bound and thrown into a corner. There was more light in the cave, but there was also more...things, in there with him. When his vision came to, he couldn't believe what he was seeing. There, huddled around in numerous gatherings, were large, man-like beings. Man-like because they walked on two legs, seemed to have two arms like men, and even seemed to speak something that was like the tongue of man. Their other features were dog-like, but they had numerous spots, stripes and other markings on their rough fur. They looked kind of like hyenas, although no hyenas he knew about ever looked like THIS.

"How long must we keep doing this?" one growled, gnawing on a fresh bone. "I don't have anything against killing men and eating what's left, but why don't we just leave and spread out?"

"We have our orders," a larger one smacked the first one with a leg bone. "We can have our kills and our meals, but we keep the bones and if they want any other body untouched, then they'll get it. In exchange, they'll make it so we can get closer to the bigger cities without anyone catching on!"

"Besides, our kind has been working alongside them for generations..."

"You mean working FOR them for generations."

"Hold your tongue or I'll rip it out!" the larger one barked. "The bones of the dead can be of use to them, whether it be in their fortunes, or it be for their research or their conquest."

"What should we do about the live one we bagged? Should we kill him outright, or see if he'll be of use to the others?"

"For now, let's just wait..." the leader turned his head and stared back at the prisoner, an evil smile crossing his face. "He isn't going anywhere!"

The cave was filled with cruel laughter of the hyena men.
This is actually pretty interesting. You see, in lycanthropy, there are all kinds of creatures that are part man, part animal. I'm not saying THESE guys are were-beings, but there are creatures like that in mythology. The source of this story material comes from the creatures in myth and folklore called GNOLLS.

Now, we usually see Gnolls in Dungeons and Dragons, but as it turns out, they are actually see in mythology! They are similar to the were-hyenas of African Folklore, and the dog-headed men of early European stories that travelers would talk about. So...yeah, these are gnolls!

They are, from what I can tell, related to death because they are known to be SOMEWHAT vampiric, taking the blood of the living and then stealing/eating buried corpses.

I ORIGINALLY thought "I'll make a story about a freaky vampire type" but then I realized how interesting Gnolls are, so WOOHOO! Here we go! ^_^
